Aku no Hana / Flowers of Evil is a strange and visceral reading experience. It is always about how an individual constructs themselves in their own mind.

To explain his social isolation, Kasuga chooses to perceive himself as more elevated, using his purported enjoyment of the Eponymous French poem book by Charles Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du mal, as evidence of this.

He is eventually seen by Nakamura performing an act that will define him to her. He finds himself experiencing a chaotic flurry of emotions. He rejects her perception of him, then tries to embody it, because it is also the first instance of an "elevated" acceptance he has received. He finds himself despising her, but also finding comfort in sharing their social isolation.

Most importantly, he then rejects acceptance from others, for he is hiding his newly constructed self from them, rendering their acceptance meaningless for they are not accepting his purported "true" self.

Ultimately, it was always a reminder to me to think carefully about who I am. Who is around. How I frame my social situation. Because a haphazardly made self-assertion has the potential to warp your future in large ways.

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate

- Carl Jung

From Les Fleurs du mal:

Alas—my poor Muse—what aileth thee now?
Thine eyes are bedimmed with the visions of Night,
And silent and cold—I perceive on thy brow
In their turns—Despair and Madness alight.

A succubus green, or a hobgoblin red,
Has it poured o'er thee Horror and Love from its urn?
Or the Nightmare with masterful bearing hath led
Thee to drown in the depths of some magic Minturne?

I wish, as the health-giving fragrance I cull,
That thy breast with strong thoughts could for ever be full,
And that rhymthmic'ly flowing—thy Christian blood

Could resemble the olden-time metrical-flood,
Where each in his turn reigned the father of Rhymes
Phoebus—and Pan, lord of Harvest-times.

Finishes

Each piece is oxidized and polished by hand to bring engraved details to life. For those drawn to a deeper transformation process, an unpolished black finish is also available—designed to wear, shift, and soften with time, revealing its story through use alone.

  • Polished: for vividness of the graphic
  • Oxidized: for those who want the blacked out look and those who want to let the natural aging process dictate the polish

Product Care

These rings are durable, but they’re not immortal. They’re a snapshot in time, meant to be worn, loved, and changed alongside you.

Silver, like most things worth owning, changes with time. It reacts to the air, the oils on your skin, the moments you live through. It may shine. It may dull. It may tarnish. It may scratch. It’s not a flaw—it’s the metal remembering.

Any brand promising silver jewelry that “lasts forever” is selling you an idea, not a reality. Sterling silver doesn’t crumble away, but it does shift, oxidize, and evolve. That’s part of the beauty. Each mark, each patina, is a reminder that nothing is still—not you, not the piece, not the world around you.

Some jewelers will coat the metal in a temporarily protective film to limit oxidation for a few months, but those are also impermanent solutions that merely delay the inevitable.

Silver Care Tips

  • Tarnish is normal. It’s just silver oxidizing, and it can be rubbed away with a soft cloth if you prefer the shine.
  • Avoid chemical cleaners if your piece has intentional darkening (oxidation). Almost all of 4th Death's jewelry makes use of blackening. Submerging a ring in chemical cleaning solutions will strip away the oxidation details.
  • Store in a dry place, ideally in a pouch or box, to slow oxidation when not in use.
  • Wear it often. Contact with your skin helps keep silver bright. It's almost ironic that the best care is to wear it.
  • If needed, polish gently with a silver cloth—never anything abrasive.
